Boiler servicing in Oxfordshire: what to expect

How often to service a gas boiler, what a service covers, how to check an engineer is Gas Safe registered, and what affects the price.

How often should a boiler be serviced?

Gas Safe Register recommends having gas appliances, including boilers, safety checked and serviced every year. Most manufacturers also require an annual service to keep the warranty valid, so check your boiler paperwork.

Landlords are legally required to have gas appliances safety checked every 12 months and give tenants a copy of the gas safety record.

Check the engineer is Gas Safe registered

Anyone working on gas appliances in the UK must be on the Gas Safe Register. Ask to see their Gas Safe ID card and check the back shows they're qualified for the work, or search their number on the Gas Safe Register website.

What affects the price?

Prices vary by boiler type, how accessible it is, whether parts need replacing and whether you bundle it with a landlord gas safety certificate. Ask two or three local engineers for a fixed price before booking. Some offer annual service plans.

Good times to book

Late spring and summer are usually quieter for heating engineers, so it's often easier to get an appointment than in the autumn rush when the heating goes back on.
