How to spot and avoid rogue traders in Oxfordshire

Warning signs of a cowboy builder or rogue trader, checks to make before you hire, and who to report them to in Oxfordshire.

Warning signs

They knock on your door uninvited saying they've spotted a problem with your roof, drive or trees.

They push you to decide today, offer a 'today only' discount, or ask for cash or a large payment upfront.

They have no landline or business address, won't give a written quote, or the price keeps rising once work starts.

They offer to drive you to the bank to get cash.

Checks to make before you hire

Get two or three written quotes and ask for references or photos of recent local jobs.

If they say they're a limited company, look them up on Companies House and check the name and address match.

Check registrations on the official sites: Gas Safe Register for gas work, NICEIC or NAPIT for electrics, TrustMark for government-endorsed trades.

Look for Oxfordshire County Council's Buy With Confidence scheme, which vets traders with Trading Standards.

Read their Google reviews — on OxonTrades you can open them straight from each listing.

Your rights

If you agree a contract at your home and they came to you, you usually have a 14-day cooling-off period and they must tell you about it in writing.

Pay in stages as work is completed, not all upfront. Paying by credit card for jobs over £100 can give extra protection.

How to report a rogue trader

If someone is at your door now and you feel threatened, call 999. Otherwise call police on 101.

Report to Trading Standards through the Citizens Advice consumer helpline on 0808 223 1133.
